Chroma Modern Bar + Kitchen Review: Lake Nona Brunch and the Cheese Wheel

| |

Chroma Modern Bar + Kitchen has a reputation in Lake Nona as the brunch spot — the place friends meet on a weekend morning for cocktails and small plates. We went with exactly that reputation in mind, and then did something slightly off-script: we skipped the classic brunch order and went for the showpiece, the tableside cheese-wheel Truffle Fettuccine Alfredo.

The short version: the food was fresh, delicious and beautifully presented, the staff was friendly and accommodating, and we would absolutely send you here for brunch with friends. The cheese wheel is fun theater — with one honest caveat if you have had the same dish across town. Here is the full story.

Built for Brunch With Friends

This is, first and foremost, a great restaurant for brunch with friends. The room is bright and modern — a long bar, communal tables, big globe lights — and the menu is built for a table that wants to order a spread and share. The brunch menu runs from country biscuits with sausage gravy, a giant cinnamon roll and New Orleans beignets to buttermilk waffles, blueberry pancakes, a Chroma Benedict, hot chicken and waffles, chilaquiles and sliders. Everything that came to our table was fresh, beautifully presented, and the kind of food that disappears while everybody is still talking.

The Cocktails

It is a ‘modern bar + kitchen,’ and the bar earns its half of the name. The brunch cocktails were colorful, balanced and very photogenic — exactly what a table of friends orders on a slow weekend morning. If your group leans toward a long, lingering brunch, this is a room designed for it.

The Cheese Wheel: Parm to Table

Now the main event. Chroma’s ‘Parm to Table Experience’ is a Truffle Fettuccine Alfredo prepared tableside in a parmesan wheel — $65, and it serves two. A cart rolls up with the giant wheel, the server torches the inside to get the cheese melting, works the hot pasta through it, and plates up a big, glossy, truffle-flecked platter of fettuccine. As dinner theater goes, it is a lot of fun, and the portion is genuinely generous for two.

And now the honest Monkey Vacations caveat: it was good — rich, cheesy, enjoyable — but it was not as good as the cheese wheel at Tratto in Avalon Park, where the fettuccine is finished in a flaming cheese wheel and, to our taste buds, comes out with a deeper, toastier cheese flavor. If you have had Tratto’s version, calibrate your expectations. If you have not, read our review of Tratto Avalon Park and put both on your list — then tell us which wheel wins for you. Either way, at Chroma you are paying for the show as much as the pasta, and the show is worth seeing once.

Service

The staff was friendly and accommodating throughout — unhurried at a meal that is supposed to be unhurried, happy to talk through the menu, and the tableside presentation was handled with real flair. Brunch lives and dies on vibe, and the team here protects it.

Our Verdict

Chroma is the Lake Nona brunch we would recommend to friends without hesitation: fresh, delicious, beautifully presented food, good cocktails, a bright modern room and service that lets you linger. The cheese-wheel fettuccine is a fun splurge for two — just know that in our personal cheese-wheel rankings, Tratto’s flaming wheel still holds the crown.
